When first seeing a wine label, it’s not unreasonable to be a bit puzzled as to the purpose of the information that’s been printed onto each label. There are actually nine different requirements that each producer must adhere to in order to sell their products in the United States. Among the most important are #5 Sulfite statement, #6 Size & Alcohol Content, #7 Importer Name and#9, the GOVERNMENT WARNING. If any one of these is missing it is IMPOSSIBLE to sell an item in the US. Another thing that makes understanding a label challenging is that producers print this information in different locations on the label. However, each bottle sold in the US must still have the required information somewhere between the two labels. For example, this label from an Italian wine has all of the mandatory information on the back label.
Thus, this front label is a nice marketing piece designed to pique your interest in the wine.
Of course if you’re looking for a good wine that’s a great value look for our logos.
