WINE MONDAY: David’s Wine of the Week David Rosengarten

2013 Robert Oatley Signature Series Great Southern Riesling, Western Australia ($18)

robert-oatley-great-southern-rieslingNo one in the U.S. has paid much attention to the amazing wine-growing region four hours south of Perth, in Western Australia. WA? Everyone in this country thinks only of Margaret River. But not me! When I was in WA, I drove on down the coast, past Margaret River, into the wonders of the Great Southern—one of which is a small region called Falkland River, growing what I think is the best Riesling in the New World. Thank God for Robert Oatley—both the winery in Australia (another part of Australia), and the importer in Petaluma, CA. Oatley is producing various wines from Great Southern fruit in Australia, and then bringing them into the U.S. This Riesling gives you an idea of what southwestern Australia can do. Very light and greenish in the glass. Beautiful lemon-and-lime nose reminiscent of great Austrian regions, like Kamptal and Kremstal. Very dry on the palate, with blindingly fresh acidity. Everything subtle that most New World Rieslings fail to achieve.

It’s best of all at dinnertime: a perfect fried chicken wine, also great for chicken and fish in creamy sauces.
