2012 Zeltingen Himmelreich QbA trocken, Weingut Alter Weinhof, Mosel ($20)

Gorgeous picnic wine, light and vital. Smells like just-cut juicy pear. Slightly fizzy, but no insubstantial. Not likely to age…just likely to titillate through 2014.

An old winery set in the remarkable Middle Mosel bend of the river that includes the villages of Erden and Urzig…prime spots for delicate, spicy Rieslings. I was struck by a couple of Alter Weinhof barrel samples from 2012, and am bringing them in now. So far…these are the only 2012s in my portfolio…because I think these wines are perfect for drinking in their youth!
